Pratham Books is looking for a dynamic Kannada Language editor, having full command over written, spoken and grammatically correct Kannada language and expertise in the translation process. The person needs to have a live connect with Kannada language and literature. The person will be responsible for anchoring the process of book development from translation of the script in Kannada language to all the steps which are needed to get the print ready PDF. The person will lead a team of translators, reviewers and proof readers, will work with the language and design team and will be responsible for the timely execution of all the processes involved.

This is a job that requires excellent English - Kannada translation ability, language skills, attention to detail. It also requires an interest in children’s literature and a creative understanding of child-friendly language. Clear communication and multitasking skills are a must.

Key Responsibilities:

• Send out the original English scripts for Kannada translations. Give inputs to the translator, see if the review is needed and get the copy proof read. Sign off the final ready to print Kannada PDF.
• Build a system to put the translation and correction processes in place.
• Track the workflow, observe the timelines, identify the bottleneck and communicate.
• Build a strong team of English- Kannada translators, reviewers and proof readers.
• Ensure the quality of translated work
• Keep in touch with the new trends and challenges in translation.
• Identify language experts in Kannada and send some of the translations for quality check.

Qualifications:

• Preferably a degree, in Literature/Journalism/Mass Communication/Media /Language (Kannada)
• Experience of working in an editorial position in a publishing house and should have hands-on experience in translation, review, proofreading and production related processes.
• Excellent communication skills in Kannada and English.
• Sharp eyes to check copy
• Ability to multi-task and be a team player
• Good technology skills
• Passion for children’s literature

Nice to have but not mandatory: Experience in working with nonprofits. 

Location: Position is based out of Bengaluru.

Salary: Will commensurate with experience. We are looking for a passionate individual who wants to be part of a team that is creating a new model in multilingual publishing to address the scarcity of books for children in need

Mangoes... MmmmmMmmmmMmmm... Alphonso, Hapus, Mundappa....is it raining mangoes where you are? 

Well it sure is at StoryWeaver. We have a wonderful mango-ey tale to share with you, so why don't you sit back with a bowl of your favourite fruit and read on?

'Mangoes for Moidootty' was one of 2015's most read stories on StoryWeaver. Created by Sreedevi Gopakumar, the tale of young Malu, Moidootty and their run-in with the terrible Aamasura was a big hit with our readers. It also happened to be one of the stories chosen for our Weave-a-Story Campaign, where we asked our community to help create 100 translations of a curated list of our stories. 

A few months ago, we received an email from an illustrator named Sahitya Rani. A graduate from NID, Sahitya loved browsing through StoryWeaver and its amazing illustration bank (3000 images from some of the country's finest illustrators) and wanted to contribute to the platform.

"...I was wondering if I could illustrate for someone else's story (honestly, I'm stumped for story ideas of my own). How would it be possible for me to get in touch with any of the writers?" she asked. 

Our digital content manager was wondering how to help Sahitya out, when she remembered 'Mangoes for Moidootty'. Sreedevi originally created the story with illustrations by the super-talented Greystroke from our image bank. We asked Sahitya if she'd like to illustrate something new for Sreedevi's story and connected her with the enthusiastic author.

Sreedevi loved the idea and the news inpsired her to go back to the story and tinker around with it. 

"I'm thrilled to have a second chance at weaving stories around mangoes and Moidootty. Spinning stories on StoryWeaver was fun, but working with and watching an illustrator bring your words to life is an exciting yet humbling experience."

The duo have been busy working on the project all through the summer: tweaking the storyline and experimenting with visual character sketches. And the good news doesn't stop there! Recently, a well known pre-school in Kochi - Sreedevi's home town - reached out to her expressing interest in planning to use 'Mangoes for Moidooty' as a resource for teaching! The school has planned an entire day of fun, hands-on activities for the little ones around the book. Lucky kids!

Every year, the entire Pratham Books family (including our lovely community) gears up for the biggest celebration of the year – our ‘One Day, One Story' campaign. Celebrated on the occasion of International Literacy Day every year, the campaign aims to take stories to as many children possible on a single day throughout the country (and beyond!)

This initiative is part of the Pratham Books' Champions program where we encourage our community of volunteers to conduct reading sessions. These sessions are conducted free of cost and mostly with children from under-served communities. The Pratham Books' Champions program is a one-of its kind volunteer program that has scaled to a national & international level with more and more volunteers joining in each year. For this year’s edition of ‘One Day One Story’, volunteers from Oracle Bangalore joined us to take stories into classrooms, thanks to our partners Mantra4Change.

On the bright morning of September 10th, about eight volunteers from Oracle’s Bangalore facility reached the Nirmal Vidyalaya on Hosa Road.  The school had an ongoing Teacher’s Day celebration which included dances and skits put up by students, a friendly cricket match between students and teachers and of course our storytelling sessions ☺ The volunteers divided themselves in six groups and headed to groups of children from Grades 4th, 5th and 6th.  The story of 'The Elephant Bird'  by Arefa Tehsin, Sonal Goyal and Sumit Sakhuja enthralled children of Grade 5 as they wondered if brave Munia could save the giant bird! In the Grade 4 classroom, children were actively participating in identifying the different seeds they find in the fruits they eat as they went on a seed collecting journey with Tooka, Poi and Inji in 'Let's Go Seed Collecting' by Neha Sumitran and Archana Sreenivasan. In Grade 6, the children kept interrupting volunteer Senthil to confirm and re-confirm if Jadav ‘Mulai’ Payeng in 'Jadav and the Tree-Place' by Vinayak Varma is a real man who actually built an entire forest on his own. The story telling sessions were followed by impromptu singing sessions, chit-chat with the students and a lot of idea and noise exchange!
