This World Environment Day, #DonateAPhoto, Empower a Story.

Pratham Books has always believed in the role books play in connecting children to the world around them. From the Chipko movement to flamingoes, from seasonal eating to conservation heroes, over the years Pratham Books has published numerous books that bring the wonders of the natural world into the lives of young readers.    

Today is World Environment Day and this year’s theme is ‘Connecting People to nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator’. Words and images can play a powerful role in helping forge this connection between children and their surroundings.

This World Environment Day, Pratham Books StoryWeaver is joining hands with the good folks at NatureinFocus to bring you #DonateAPhoto, Empower a Story: a campaign to crowdsource 100 environment-related photographs. These photographs will be uploaded to StoryWeaver, and join over 6,000 other openly licensed illustrations on the platform. Through the #DonateAPhoto campaign, we hope to add to the diversity of our image bank, and offer our community of users, stunning photographs with which they can create multilingual stories, flashcards and more.

How to enter

  1. Select an environment related photograph YOU have taken. It could be flora, fauna… anything.

  2. If you have a StoryWeaver account already, click here, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on 'Upload your own illustration/image' to upload your image.

  3. If you don’t have a StoryWeaver account, click here to create one. It won’t take more than a minute.

  4. Fill out the form and upload your images. Remember to read the note on CCBY 4.0 if you're unfamiliar with the license.

  5. Add tags to describe your image, so that people can find it easily on the repository. For. eg if you’re sharing an image of a barn owl use tags like ‘owl’, ‘barn owl’, ‘birds’. Don’t forget to add the tag DonateAPhoto too!

  6. Sit back and feel super happy that you’ve contributed to our image bank. Go back to step 1 to repeat, or tag your friends on social media to join in too!

Campaign Guidelines

  1. Campaign runs from June 5 - 12, 2017

  2. All images uploaded must be taken by you.

  3. Photographs uploaded must should be a minimum of 300 dpi and the file size should not be exceeded 2 MB.

  4. By uploading an image you agree to the terms and conditions of CC-BY4.0

StoryWeaver needs an Editorial Assistant!

As the stories on StoryWeaver are travelling further, we need more hands on board! 

StoryWeaver is a digital repository of openly-licensed, multilingual children's stories. A Pratham Books' initiative, StoryWeaver allows its users to read, create and translate stories into many, many Indian and international languages in the hope that children across the world can read quality stories in languages of their choice. 

Currently, we're looking for a full-time, Editorial Assistant to join our Digital Team in Bangalore. 

As an Editorial Assistant at StoryWeaver, this is what will keep you busy:

  • Working with a designer to adapt our legacy content (Pratham Books' print books) for StoryWeaver

  • Co-ordinating with authors, illustrators, translators, reviewers and proofreaders

  • Reviewing and editing manuscripts

  • Co-ordinating with the administrative team for documentation, records and payments (contracts, work orders, etc)

  • Identifying and working with other content creators who may want their stories on StoryWeaver

  • Nurturing StoryWeaver's user community

  • Support campaigns aimed at improving content on StoryWeaver

  • Finding creative ways for stories on StoryWeaver to travel wide and far

  • Uploading books on StoryWeaver which involves tagging stories and images in a way that makes it accessible to users

Preferred Requirements

  • Degree in Literature/Journalism/Mass Communication/Media /Language 

  • Excellent Communication skills in English, and ability to read and write well in any one Indian language (preferably Kannada or Telugu)

  • 1-2 years of work experience; freshers may also apply

  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate between different stakeholders

  • Be a good team player

  • Tech-savvy

  • Sharp eyes to check copy

  • Love for languages

Pratham Books is Hiring : Print Production Manager

Pratham Books is a not-for-profit children's book publisher that was set up in 2004 to publish good quality, affordable books in many Indian languages. Our mission is to see ‘a book in every child’s hand’ and we have spread the joy of reading to millions of children in India.

In the last 13 years we have published over 3000 books and printed over 14 million copies and 16 million storycards. In 2015, Pratham Books' increased its footprint by going digital. As an industry leader we were one of the first publishers in the country to open license our content. All this content in now available onStoryWeaver, our digital platform that hosts stories in 59 languages. The stories can be read, translated, versioned or downloaded for free. With both the print and digital initiatives being scaled, Pratham Books is looking for a Print Production Manager to take the lead of its print, production and digitization processes.

Job Description:

As a Print Production Manager you will be driving the management of a busy studio that can change from a quiet environment to one full of freelancers and multiple projects all running at the same time. Your job will be to manage the studio and production schedules as well as the day to day administrative responsibilities of running the studio of a reputed publishing house.

This is a job that requires attention to detail, organisation and time management. Clear communication and multitasking skills are a must.

We require an individual who is motivated, knows how to manage the requirements of book production that can require multiple cycles of reviews and adaptations for different platforms. Ability to prioritize workload to manage the studio schedule within the budgetary requirements.

You will work closely with the Editorial team to ensure timely delivery of all aspects of production for print and digital books - from layouts to pagination, optimizing image quality and proofreading to readying artworks, uploading digital books and QC (quality checking).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with editorial groups to create the final files for production of both print and digital formats of our books
  • Upload the digital books on StoryWeaver
  • Prioritize and manage timely output
  • Supervise the design and production team
  • Develop work procedures, establish quality standards and be responsible for releasing the final files
  • Schedule daily studio workload, coordinate approvals from different teams, manage version control etc
  • Train and monitor studio staff in all relevant skill areas.
  • Liaison with cross functional teams
  • Maintain an efficient archiving system
  • Maintain accurate records of work in progress for billing 

Must have:

  • 7-8 years experience of working within a creative agency / publishing house
  • A working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in leading a mid-size team consisting of layout artists, DTP, Photoshop and artwork people
  • References to previous work

Salary: Subject to level of previous experience

Location: Delhi
